Capillarity Learning Objectives

In this section you will learn about the behavior of water when it comes into contact with small passages.   Understanding thie behavior is important to many soil water phenomena.

After studying these materials you are expected to:

1) Define the term capillarity as it relates to water and small diameter (capillary) tubes or porous media.

2) Describe how capilarity occurs when a small diamter tube is placed in contact with water.

3) Construct a free body diagram of water in a capillary tube.

4) Using the free body diagram in objective (3) develop a relationship between capillary rise, diameter, and surface tension.

5) Give examples of agricultural systems in which capillarity plays an important role.
